One of my favourite ways to add the element of surprise to blues solos, is to use the half-whole diminished scale to create tension and release over the transition from the I chord to the IV chord.
Robben Ford was the first blues guitarist I heard using this ‘outside’ approach and I’ve rinsed it in my own blues solos ever since.
