Here’s a fusion lick in the key of D. The chord progression is a classic 2/5/1/4 : Em7/ A7 / Dmaj7 / Gmaj7.
Over the A7 chord I use the A altered scale/mode, also known as the super locrian scale/mode. This scale allows us to play ‘tension’ notes like the b9, #9, #11 & b13.
Remember, to play the altered scale you just have to play a melodic minor scale up a semi-tone the dominant chord you want to alter. A7 : play Bb melodic minor .
