Here we have a jam over a well known chord progression in the fusion-jazz-funk world. I have simplified most chords down to 9 chords, in order to avoid scary extensions for those who aren't experienced with them Enjoy!
Mixolydian material works well with this track, but you must follow the changes, it's not neccessarily in Ab the whole time. A portion of the track is in E. I much enjoy the social interaction that comes with improvising, and the various ways it can be done. Ask me any quesitons, any time.
If you have a hard time playing over this, don't accept defeat, but rather go and play with our mixolydian - 12 Key - track until you are more comfortable with the scale. Knowing the 12 keys of the Major and Minor Pentatonic scales, in the standard 5 positions should be a pre requisite to jamming on all tracks, if you are a guitarist.
Chord Progression
Note that many of the chords 'punch-in' or 'push' in a little before beat 1 in some cases, so when improvising over it, adjust accordingly to the feel!
Intro = Absus7 Ab7 | Absus7 Ab7 | Gbsus7 Ab7 | Gbsus7 Ab7 |
Verse
| Ab9 | Ab9 D9 | Db9 | E9 Eb9 |
| Ab9 | Ab9 D9 | Db9 | Eb9 D9 |
| Db9 | Db9 E9 | Ab9 | Ab9 D9 |
| Db9 C9 | B9 Bb9 |
Breakdown / Jamout
E9 for 15 bars, 16th bar pushes shots on E9, Eb9 Eb9, then back to the verse on Ab9
During the jamout on E, i place no shame upon those who take a break from playing mixolydian and jazz idioms, to just let out some blues, even though there is no flat 3 in the recordings. I won't call the jazz police.
The track also goes back to the intro at some points, to freshen things up and have another chance to think for a moment.
Please enjoy, and post videos of yourselves playing on these tracks!
