Here is the first video in a long series of beginner to advanced improvisation playalong challenges. The content applies to anyone wishing to improvise, and will eventually delve deeper into some further steps to be taken after learning the Pentatonic Scale. It is just my opinion, that the minor and major pentatonic scales are a very important foundation for improvisation on any instrument, and knowing it all over the fretboard is a challenge most people neglect.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This track is designed to make sure that everyone understands the first(my opinion, not necessarily fact) shape of the pentatonic scale, including knowing it in all 12 keys, in any order, without hesitating on where to go for each key.
Challenges:
- Playing through the scale with 8th notes(2x), triplet 8th notes(3x), 16th notes(3x), without stopping. Get into a 'pocket' with the drums and the bass, really try to match.
- Finding each key on time, with only one beats worth of time to find it.
- Playing clean in the lower wide section of the guitar, compared to the higher and more 'crowded' section of the guitar.
- Knowing which notes within the pattern are the 'root' note or 'home' note.
HINT - There are 3 root notes in this shape, which are seen in the onscreen shape diagram as black dots with a white square within
- Playing through all 12 keys without losing steam or time.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are unable to play at the triplet or the 16th note speed, just continue on with 8th note speed, or practice with the Dorian 12 Keys Track until you feel you can reach the next note value for speed.
STOP PLAYING if you feel any tension, pain, discomfort.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If this challenge is too easy for you and you feel you have mastered playing the scale in all 12 keys in various orders and the various fret sizes of the neckboard... keep on jamming with our other tracks... and...
Stay tuned for Level 2 and more, which will proceed into the next 4 shapes which people usually are much less familiar with, as well as sequences, patterns, and melodic ideas.
