One of the most brutal exercises that I give my students is one when they are asking to be able to play more complex chords, like in jazz and classical. And it goes like this: if you take your fingers and set them up like a set of stairs on strings four, three, two, and one, just like you see here, you're going to arpeggiate up and down.
So like this. You're going to move that first finger back and leave a space.
And so on and so forth. So the second finger moves, third finger moves, fourth finger moves while the other fingers stay in place.
As we get closer to the nut, the spread is going to get wider.
