Leigh shows us how the flat 5 interval and diminished note clashes with the root note to sound 'off' and how Tony Iommi has used this combination, including power chords to create his signature and instantly recognisable Tony Iommi sound.

Tony Iommi is one of the most influential guitarists of all time. He is best known as the founder and lead guitarist of Black Sabbath, one of the pioneer bands of heavy metal music. Iommi is also considered to be one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time. He has inspired generations of guitarists with his unique playing style and songwriting abilities.

Influenced by British blues musicians such as Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck and rockabilly guitarists such as Scotty Moore and James Burton, Iommi's playing style is a unique blend of these influences and shaped the way he approached playing the guitar. His blues style can be clearly heard through his use of pentatonic licks in solos!

Iommi's biggest influence on us as guitarists came from his use of power chords and palm-muting techniques - which were unheard of in the 70s. These guitar techniques allowed him to create a signature sound that was both heavy and catchy. His riff-based songwriting style was also hugely influential, particularly in the development of heavy metal music, doom and sludge metal.
