In this video, Leigh will show us 4 reasons why you should use backing tracks as a beginner guitar player and offer some practical tips on improving our playing using a Blues guitar backing track.
Watch as Leigh discusses one of the best ways to improve your timing when playing guitar through the use of a backing track. Learn how they help you develop rhythm when it comes to guitar soloing, how they can help you decide how to long to linger on each note when ripping out a guitar solo. This is especially important when playing in band or jamming with other blues or rock musicians!
Leigh also shows us how backing tracks improve our guitar playing as they are a great way to practice scales whilst improving phrasing - a vital skill to have if you want to convey the right emotion during a solo. In this example, Leigh uses an E minor pentatonic scale and plays along with a blues backing track, to show you how you can get a feel for how the scale sounds in context and how to bend and slide between the notes to create more emotion and some really interesting solo techniques.
But backing tracks can be useful for more than just practising scales and phrasing as they can also help you learn to CHANGE scales over chord changes which ensures you're hitting the right scales and notes when the band decides to change from E to A and then to B. These note changes in line with chord changes is a key factor in blues guitar soloing, used by BB King, Stevie Ray Vaughan and John Mayer.
